# Templates

> Start a project from an existing structure.

Templates create a new project from a prebuilt Mana project. A template can include writing segments, scratches, Atlas entries, labels, enabled project features, and other project settings.

Use a template when you want a useful starting structure instead of a blank project.

## Start from a template

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open New Project">
    From the project list, choose **New Project**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a template">
    Select a template from the left side of the dialog. Only templates that are currently available are shown.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the project">
    Enter a project name and choose the writing language.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the project">
    Mana creates a copy of the template under your account. The source template is not changed.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What gets copied

Templates can copy the project content tree, scratches, Atlas entries, labels, extension settings, editor configuration, and writing language.

Some personal or generated data is not copied:

* Character chat conversations
* Discord bot connections
* AI usage history
* Generated AI context

<Note>
  Very large templates may briefly show empty copied documents while Mana finishes copying their editor content in the background.
</Note>

## Current template types

Available templates can change over time. Mana currently supports template families for fiction, non-fiction, and game story projects when those templates are enabled by the team.
