# Notes and scratches

> Organize main content and scratch drafts in the left sidebar.

Each project has two writing trees in the left sidebar:

* **Content**: the main structure for your manuscript, article, script, or other project.
* **Scratches**: notes, fragments, experiments, and draft material that is not part of the main structure.

## Content tree

The content tree supports folders and text documents.

Use it to organize chapters, scenes, sections, acts, or any structure that fits your work.

You can:

* Create text documents
* Create folders
* Rename items
* Drag and drop to reorder
* Nest folders and documents
* Assign labels to text documents
* Delete items

## Scratches

Scratches use the same basic tree behavior, but they are separate from the main content tree.

Use scratches for:

* Loose notes
* Draft paragraphs
* Research fragments
* Alternate scenes
* Ideas you have not placed yet

Scratches are not treated as canonical project content for Mana's project understanding.

## Import from the New menu

The content tree **New** menu also contains import options for Word and Markdown files.

## Limits

Project plans can limit how many content and scratch segments you can create. Existing segments remain editable after a downgrade, but creating new ones can be blocked when you are over the new plan limit.
